Tottenham’s decision to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract could prove costly

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has been discussed a number of times in the last year or so.

The Belgium international defender has been linked with a number of moves in the past, whilst he has thrown doubt on remaining with Spurs as he continually refused to sign a new deal with the club.

According to a report by The Daily Mail, it appears as though Tottenham have decided to exercise their right to extend the 29-year-old’s present contract by a further year, however, it will come at a cost.

It is understood that because of the Wembley Stadium outfit’s decision to do so, Alderweireld will now be available to leave for a fee of just £25million.

The fee would be considered a bargain for the enforcer as he has continually shown how good he is and how vital he has been for Tottenham.

The Verdict:

Tottenham really appear to be in a lose-lose situation when it comes down to the circumstances they find themselves in with Alderweireld.

With the defender’s current deal set to expire in the summer, they risk losing the defender for nothing, whilst triggering the extension will get them a fee of £25m should a club look to make a swoop for him.

At such a bargain price, it would be difficult to envisage the Belgian remaining at the north London outfit for too much longer.
