West Bromwich Albion came from behind twice to beat Huddersfield Town 4-2 in the Championship with one midfielder proving to be crucial for the Baggies (via BBC).
Goals from Darnell Furlong, Matt Phillips and Semi Ajayi saw Slaven Bilic’s side come back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Matt Phillips was the star man as he scored goals either side of half-time to set the side on their way to victory. The Scotland international proved to be the attacking output as he had the double the number of shots of any player on the pitch (via WhoScored).
Furlong was a nuisance on the right-hand side, as he provided the perfect blend of defensive and attacking football. The 23-year-old attempted the most tackles and interceptions, as well as having the joint-second most shots and scoring for the Baggies in yesterday’s win.
However, it was the £2.7m-rated (per Transfermarkt) Romaine Sawyers, who seemingly escaped the attention of the masses as he put in yet another tidy performance in the middle of the park. West Brom’s midfield star played the joint-second most passes (75), whilst losing the ball just twice. His ability to push the Baggies up the pitch was clear as 50 of his attempted 75 passes were forward-thinking.
It seems Express and Star agreed with this assessment of the Birmingham-born player as they gave Sawyers a seven out of 10, highlighting his ability on the ball.
They said: “The one thing you can always guarantee with Sawyers is that he will be positive and forward-thinking in possession.”
“There were points he struggled to impose himself in the first-half but he impressed when he did get on the ball.”
“After the interval, though, he was instrumental in forcing Huddersfield back and making sure Albion were going to be the only team to have any momentum.” (Source: Express and Star)
With Sawyers’ ability on the ball, the Midland side have a player who has the potential to push them towards promotion to the Premier League.
