West Ham are under pressure to escape a looming relegation battle, after zero wins since September has left them in 16th place in the Premier League, just five points from the relegation zone. They’ve conceded 20 goals this season, with only three teams letting in more, and that’s a worrying sign for the months ahead.
The West Ham Way podcast on Phoenix FM reported the Hammers are interested in signing Jack Butland from Stoke on loan in January. The 26-year-old has played in nine out of 16 games for the Potters who sit second from bottom in the Championship. @ExWHUemployee on Twitter told the podcast West Ham will look to sign the Englishman permanently in summer, after the loan spell.
The Guardian reported the club fear current goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski could be injured until January, and he said in a video update on the club’s website that he’s at risk of repeating the injury in the future. Manuel Pellegrini claimed he was the best goalkeeper in the Premier League last season, so the signing of Butland would be in preparation for any more issues with their current first choice.
