A lot of West Ham fans are debating who has scored the side’s best ever goal after the club tweeted out a graphic of Paolo Di Canio’s famous goal and called it the greatest ever for the Hammers.
It was scored on March 26th 2000 against Wimbledon at the Boleyn Ground in a 2-1 victory, via West Ham. The Italian’s goal was the first of the match and after a great diagonal ball by Trevor Sinclair, the forward decided to unleash a powerful volley into the opposite corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance to save it.
The iconic strike goes down in English football history as one of the great moments, however some fans believe that former players Andy Carroll and Dimitri Payet deserve to be involved in the debate for their fantastic efforts, which both came against fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace.
Fans have seen some great goals over the years, but the club feels as if the Di Canio one tops the others, perhaps just for the sheer confidence from the forward to attempt such a strike.
