One of the repercussions of not managing to gain promotion back to the Premier League for Aston Villa was not being able to extend captain John Terry’s contract.
The Chelsea legend and former England skipper was influential both on and off the pitch for Aston Villa in their failed pursuit of a return to English football’s promised land. But with no Premier League television money, the Villans find themselves in serious financial trouble – which is why the club could not extend Terry’s contract on its previous terms, even if he was willing to spend another season in the Championship.
With Terry now through the exit door, Steve Bruce must bring in another central defender to partner James Chester at the heart of Villa’s defence.
According to the Bristol Post, Aston Villa are targeting Robert Huth as a possible Terry replacement after he was released by Leicester City earlier this month.
Looking at the experience Terry brought to Villa Park and what it did for the team and its youngsters like Jack Grealish, Huth has the potential to be a good acquisition. Of course, Huth is not as good as a defender as Terry, but the German could still have a similar impact at the club.
Huth’s free agent status is another reason why Bruce should strongly consider making an approach for the ex-Leicester player. The current financial climate at Aston Villa will make it difficult for Bruce to improve his side, so the 57-year-old must take these type of transfer market opportunities when they present themselves.
