Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has urged Liverpool to make a 'smart move' for Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane this summer.

The lowdown: Injury-plagued

The Reds are already racking up the injuries after losing Joel Matip in the build-up to the Crystal Palace draw on Monday.

After that match, Jurgen Klopp joked that it was 'like we had a witch in the building' as Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino and Joe Gomez also suffered knocks to add to the already sidelined group including Diogo Jota, Thiago and Ibrahima Konate.

Big-money summer signing Darwin Nunez will also now miss the next three matches having been sent off for violent conduct at Anfield, leaving Liverpool short on attacking options, and one pundit has suggested a signing could be necessary in order to future proof the squad...

The latest: 'Fans would be happy...'

Following links to Germany and Bayern superstar Sane, speaking to Football Insider, ex-Everton striker and Sky Sports contributor Campbell has suggested that Liverpool should be looking to add the versatile attacker.

He said: “I think there is room for Leroy Sane at Liverpool. We all know that is all about the squad these days. There is going to be injuries, loss of form and back-to-back league and Champions League games. You need to be able to flip your squad so everybody is fresh.

“If it was Diaz one game and Sane the next… I’m sure Liverpool fans would be happy with that. Many teams would love that strength in depth, let’s be honest. I think it would be a smart move to go for Sane.

“When you look at the way City are, their bench is phenomenal. It is incredible the strength in depth they have. You need to match that to compete with them. It is frightening. With five subs it can make a huge difference.”

The verdict: Unlikely

Albeit the 26-year-old dribbling maestro would undoubtedly be a supreme asset in Klopp's ranks, valued at £54million and still with three years remaining on a deal in Bavaria (Transfermarkt), any move for Sane would be too expensive for the Reds for a player who would ultimately be used in a rotation system.

One way this could become a reality is should the 45-cap German ace become disillusioned with his role at the Allianz Arena and angle for a transfer away, particularly following the arrival of Liverpool icon Sadio Mane this summer.

Last season, Sane - who was hailed as 'world class' by talent scout Jacek Kulig - scored 14 times and provided 15 assists in 46 outings across all competitions.

Early on in this campaign, despite the signing of Mane, the forward with the ability to operate on either wing and centrally looks to have a continued pivotal role in Julian Nagelsmann's plans having featured in all three competitive games so far.
