Liverpool are interested in signing Benfica sensation Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Nunez enjoying superb season

The 22-year-old has arguably emerged as one of the most exciting young players in world football, catching the eye with his attacking brilliance this season.

Nunez has scored an incredible 25 goals in just 22 Primeira Liga starts for Benfica, not to mention six Champions League strikes, two of which came against Liverpool.

There could be a huge battle to sign the Uruguayan this summer, with Fabrizio Romano saying he will be one of the 'big name' sagas of the transfer window, and the Reds look to be in the picture.

The Latest: Liverpool keen on move

According to AS [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are one of the 'candidates' to sign Nunez, with several Premier League clubs wanting to 'advance his signing'. Benfica may demand a whopping €130million (£109m) for his services, though.

It is stressed that a move to Anfield 'may be conditioned' by Mohamed Salah leaving, in order for Jurgen Klopp not to have too many options at his disposal.

The Verdict: Next summer instead?

While Nunez is clearly a special talent, there isn't the need for Liverpool to sign him this summer, unless someone leaves, as the report alludes to.

Klopp has five incredible attacking options to choose from already and he has only just turned Sadio Mane into a formidable central striker, which will presumably continue moving forward.

It would make more sense for Liverpool to snap up Nunez next summer - the youngster has been hailed as someone who will be the 'best in the world' one day by former manager Jorge Jesus - when Roberto Firmino could move on after his contract expires.
