Manchester United are preparing for a significant summer rebuild as Erik ten Hag looks to reshape key areas of his squad ahead of the new season.
With Casemiro expected to depart following what has arguably been his strongest campaign in a United shirt, the club are already assessing replacements across midfield, defence and full-back positions.
Uncertainty also remains over the futures of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, meaning further defensive reinforcements are likely to be required.
However, amid the expected turnover, United are set to retain one of their most experienced and influential squad members.
Heaton Set for United Contract Extension
Tom Heaton is in line to sign a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Manchester United for a sixth season at Old Trafford, according to The Mirror.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper may not feature regularly on the pitch, but he remains highly valued internally for his leadership, professionalism and influence within the dressing room. He has also played a mentoring role for younger players, including Senne Lammens during his debut Premier League season.
Although Altay Bayındır is expected to move on this summer, and André Onana’s long-term future is also uncertain after a loan spell at Trabzonspor, Heaton’s extension would provide much-needed continuity as third-choice goalkeeper while also helping United meet homegrown squad requirements for their return to the Champions League.
Despite limited playing time in recent years, Heaton’s presence is seen as important behind the scenes.
Casemiro previously highlighted his impact in an interview on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, saying: “He is very important. Very important for us. He pushes the training, he pushes in the game, of course, he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time. For me, everyone needs this guy; he helps the room so much.”
That influence appears to be a key reason United are keen to keep him around as they prepare for another demanding season.
