Newcastle United: Rangers looking to extend Glen Kamara’s contract following Magpies’ summer interest

Glen Kamara in action vs Aberdeen

Rangers are looking to extend the contract of midfielder Glen Kamara after seeing the 25-year-old attract the interest of a growing number of clubs, including Newcastle United.

Kamara has become a crucial member of Steven Gerrard’s squad and he has played a key role in helping the Scottish giants get off to a strong start to the campaign. The ‘Gers are now keen to tie him down to a new deal ahead of the January window when it is expected he will attract plenty of interest, per TEAMtalk.

Newcastle might have missed their chance to sign Glen Kamara

Steve Bruce added to his midfield options in the summer with the arrival of Jeff Hendrick on a free transfer from Burnley. However, the Magpies boss was also hopeful of adding further options in the middle of the park, as Newcastle missed out on both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley from Chelsea in the closing days of the domestic transfer window, per Chronicle Live.

Another target who Newcastle did not manage to secure in the summer was Kamara. Along with Burnley, Brighton and Sheffield United, the Magpies made checks on the midfielder’s availability over the summer, per TEAMtalk. However, no move materialised for the Finland international.

It is now being reported that the likes of Southampton, Leeds United, Everton, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund and Lille are weighing up a move for the midfielder in January, per TEAMtalk. Newcastle are expected to have funds available for that transfer window, but those would be more likely spent on loan additions, meaning they could once again miss out on Kamara.

Newcastle could regret not signing Glen Kamara in the summer

It now seems unlikely that the Magpies will be able to sign Kamara given the growing interest in him and Rangers’ stance. Bruce could well regret not making his interest in the 25-year-old more concrete over the summer, with the midfielder having excelled for Gerrard’s side at the start of this campaign.

Kamara has so far averaged an impressive 92% passing accuracy, as well as averaging 0.9 key passes and 0.9 interceptions per game (Sofascore). That level of performance has seen him labelled as a ‘class act’ by Gerrard and he could have added to several attributes among Newcastle’s midfield had he made the move to St James’ Park.
