Sheffield Wednesday: Club provide Barry Bannan injury update

Sheffield Wednesday's Barry Bannan applauds fans after the Fulham match

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has provided an injury update on midfielder Barry Bannan, saying that he has been struggling with some tightness in his groin (via swfc.co.uk).

The Scotsman missed the Owls’ recent 2-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, but Monk is hopeful that the injury is nothing too serious.

There was some surprise when Bannan was not included in the starting line-up for their trip to Lancashire on Saturday, but it appears as though it is nothing too major.

Indeed, Monk has confirmed that he expects the former Aston Villa and Leeds United man to return to training this week, which would indicate that he could be available for their upcoming fixture against Swansea City on Saturday.

Speaking to the official Sheffield Wednesday website, Monk said: “Barry had a little tightness in his groin in the week. He didn’t quite make this game but he’ll be back in training at the start of the week.”

This is excellent news for all concerned with Sheffield Wednesday, as Bannan is a huge player for the Championship outfit.

Indeed, he has been a regular for the Owls this season, starting 12 of their 15 league matches to date and even captaining them in nine of those (TransferMarkt).

The 29-year-old has provided three assists in that time, meaning that alongside Kadeem Harris and Adam Reach he has created the most goals in the Wednesday squad (TransferMarkt).

Monk acknowledged that it was a blow to lose the Scot for the Blackburn game, saying: “Barry is a big miss. He has that quality, we all know what he can bring to the team,” (swfc.co.uk).

But with it looking likely that he only has a minor injury and that he should be back this week, there is bound to be a collective sigh of relief around Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday fans, how big a miss is Barry Bannan when he doesn’t play for you? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
