Top 5 Funny World Cup Moments

David Schiavone 3 December 2009, 21:00 2 minutes read

As the World Cup draw is getting ever closer, I thought it best to look at some of the funny, stupid and downright ridiculous moments of tournaments past to wet your appetite for the forthcoming tournament in South Africa. There have been a plethora of ridiculous incidents to choose from, players, managers and celebrity superstars. They say, ‘football is a funny old game’ and here is the evidence to support that statement.

1994 – Diana Ross Misses Penalty
So you are the most powerful nation on earth hosting the biggest sporting event in the entire world, you enlist one of the greatest pop stars your country has produced to help open the event, but you ask one thing. Kick a spherical object of a circumference of not more than 70 cm not less than 68cm, not weighing more than 450 g into an area of 7.32m by 2.44m. It seems it cannot be done.

1974 – Zaire Defend a Free-Kick

The first sub-Saharan team to play in a World Cup, fantastic technical ability and great passion shown from fans and players but no one told them about the rules for defending a free kick. Priceless.

1978 – Scotland Winning the World Cup with Ally’s Army

The title says it all, ridiculous, well these days at least. But back in 1978 Scotland had some of the best players around, Kenny Dalglish, Joe Jordan and Lou Macari. High hopes going into a tournament but disaster, crushed by Peru then a humiliating draw against Iran rounded off with a victory over Holland. But here’s the song, pure genius.

2006 – Three Yellow Cards Mr Poll?

Now your one of the top referees in the game, you even have a chance of officiating a World Cup Final, but what do you do? In front of an audience of millions you show the same player 3 (Three) yellow cards. What an idiot! You’ll be glad to know Graham Poll has retired from refereeing.

1950 – USA beat England 1-0

Need I say more?

Lets hope we have a few more funny moments in South Africa that we can add to the list
