Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has said that Dwight Gayle would be a brilliant signing for West Bromwich Albion in the winter transfer window.
The links with Gayle come after a report in the Shields Gazette, who are saying that the Newcastle United frontman remains on their shortlist of strikers they want to sign in the January transfer window.
Prutton said a move for the 28-year-old would fit well with the team that manager Slaven Bilic is building at the Hawthorns.
The Sky Sports presenter, who was speaking to Football League World, likened the transfer of Gayle to another man who made a move to the Championship mid-season.
He said: “It would be fantastic – especially with the nature of the team they’ve got, and how he’s put it together. Romaine Sawyers has come in and taken like a duck to water and he’s one of several key players that they have got.”
“Dwight deserves a run of games, as it doesn’t help him at all when he’s coming off the bench to play only small parts of games. I think he’d be a great addition.”
“The timing of the signing could be absolutely perfect – we saw Aleksandar Mitrovic sign for Fulham in 2018 at a similar time, and that was a massive statement.”
It is plain for all to see that Prutton is probably right in his analysis of a potential transfer for Gayle to the Midlands. The Englishman had a storming impact at the Hawthorns last season, scoring 24 goals in 41 appearances for the club as he helped lead them to the Championship play-offs (via Transfermarkt).
However, his season last campaign was not just a one-off. Gayle seems to fit well in the second-tier of English football as he has shown in his career. The forward has scored 59 goals in exactly 100 appearances in the Championship.
A move for Gayle to the Hawthorns could help push West Brom over the line in their chase for promotion this season.
