He has yet to really feature prominently under Jose Mourinho this year at all – and so for many, a departure has been inevitable.

A deal to take Depay away from Man Utd is beginning to look increasingly certain, with Lyon and Man Utd reportedly having agreed a fee – but our landlord can’t help but think that it is a bit of a mistake.

Didn’t Get A Chance

It is hard to dispute the fact that Memphis Depay has not really had a chance at Man Utd.

Under Louis van Gaal, he was quickly dropped when he showed a sign of disappointing form, and he found it very difficult to reassert himself.

Jose Mourinho has worsened the situation this season, and has hardly given him a chance at all – meaning that the writing has been on the wall for Depay.

If he is going to impress, he needs a run of games to solidify himself and get going. If Man Utd offered him that, maybe he would be performing better.

Record

There can be no doubts about it – his record prior to his move to Man Utd was astounding.

He scored a stunning 22 goals in his final season in the Netherlands, and you can’t do that without being a great player.

Sure, the Premier League is a different league entirely, but you don’t just lose that quality by moving country.

He will start scoring again, wherever he moves to, and Man Utd will regret moving him on.

Potential

It is easy to forget, but Memphis Depay is still just 22-years-old.

He still has the best years of his career ahead of him, and there is no doubting that he is going to go on to be a star.

It hasn’t worked out for him in the Premier League, but very rarely are players regular starters in the English top flight at just 22-years-old. Mourinho made a similar decision when he sold Kevin De Bruyne at Chelsea – and we all know how that turned out.
