Leeds United: Fans react as Phil Hay picks Ben White as Young Player of the Year – with a twist

Loads of Leeds United supporters have been discussing Ben White after The Athletic’s Phil Hay picked him as the Peacocks’ Young Player of the Year – with a shock twist.
The sports reporter announced he has chosen the youngster for the award on Twitter, but dropped a bombshell by revealing that the board aren’t optimistic about their chances of holding on to the Brighton loanee in the upcoming transfer window.
White has caught the attention of multiple suitors, including the likes of Premier League leaders Liverpool, after a stellar spell under Marcelo Bielsa.
Ever since arriving at Elland Road from the South Coast on a short-term contract, the 22-year-old has impressed at the back for Bielsa’s Whites in the Championship, making 37 appearances, registering 1.7 tackles per game, averaging at least 2.3 interceptions, and completing 3 clearances on average in the English second division (WhoScored).
Unsurprisingly, the journalist’s choice prompted plenty of replies from Leeds fans. Whilst some lauded White’s performances, others were dismayed by Hay’s revelation that the club have little hope of keeping him next season. One fan admitted supporters are “deluded” if they think the centre-back will stay in the summer, with another adding the writer has “ruined my day.”

Best centre back I’ve seen at Leeds

Its between White and Phillips for Player of the Season never mind young player and White wins on having practically no dips in form. Will be our biggest loss next season in the PL. #lufc

Even if we did manage to keep him next season, we would only be a stepping stone for him. He and KP will be playing European football in 18 months time. Deluded if we think it’s with us #lufc

That’s the thing about having players on loan all we do is make them better players for other clubs to benefit from, specially when they are getting trained by the master Bielsa

So good. Most naturally gifted centre half I’ve seen at ER since Woody and Ferdinand. And yes, I’m including Sean Gregan in that.
