Newcastle United are entering a defining stretch of their season.
With 11 Premier League fixtures remaining, they remain in contention for European qualification, though their current position of 11th leaves little margin for error.
In the Champions League, however, the Magpies have impressed. A commanding 9-3 aggregate victory over Qarabag sealed their place in the last 16, where a formidable Barcelona side now awaits.
Amid this crucial run of fixtures, speculation has intensified around one of their standout performers — and manager Eddie Howe has now addressed the rumours head-on.
Howe Responds to Gordon Rumours
Eddie Howe has dismissed talk linking Anthony Gordon with a move away from St James’ Park, branding the speculation as irrelevant.
The winger has recently been associated with potential transfers to both Manchester United and Arsenal.
Reports have suggested that Arsenal may be leading the chase for the former Everton forward. When asked about the growing rumours ahead of Newcastle’s upcoming clash with Gordon’s old club Everton, Howe made it clear he is not concerned.
“I’m not sure there’s a lot I can do about that. I’ve not seen the story, so it’s news to me,” Howe said in his pre-match press conference. “But we’re mid-season, we’re in the middle of some of the biggest games of his career and who knows what’s going to happen internationally with him in the summer as well.
“He’s got not time to look left or right, he’s got to be fully focused on straight ahead and the next game and trying to be as good as he can be.”
Gordon, previously described as “world class” by team-mate Joe Willock, has been a key figure for Newcastle throughout the campaign. His pace, work rate and attacking output have made him central to Howe’s plans.
With so much still to play for domestically and in Europe, Newcastle can ill afford distractions. Howe’s firm response underlines the club’s desire to keep Gordon fully focused — and retaining a player of his calibre could prove vital not only for the remainder of this season, but for the club’s long-term ambitions.
