Ipswich Town considering re-signing “brilliant” 23-year-old star

Ipswich Town have spent heavily this summer as they prepare for another battle to stay in the Premier League, with the Tractor Boys investing around £109m on a host of new arrivals.

The club have brought in the likes of Sasa Lukic and Issa Diop from Fulham, Florentino from Burnley, Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City, Daizen Maeda and Chuba Akpom, among others, as they look to build a squad capable of competing at the top level.

However, with the summer window approaching its conclusion, Ipswich could now turn to a familiar face to round off their recruitment.

Ipswich Interested in Re-Signing Delap

Ipswich Town are considering a move to bring Liam Delap back to Portman Road, with the striker’s uncertain situation at Chelsea opening the door to a potential reunion.

According to The Independent, the Tractor Boys are understood to be among several clubs monitoring the 23-year-old, with Nottingham Forest also keeping tabs on his availability.

Delap is no longer Chelsea’s first-choice No 9 after Joao Pedro moved ahead of him in the pecking order. The forward is also among the players currently training away from the main group as new boss Xabi Alonso works to trim his oversized squad.

That has understandably attracted interest, particularly from Ipswich, who know exactly what Delap can offer after his successful spell with the club.

The striker spent the 2023/24 season at Portman Road on loan from Manchester City, scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances as Ipswich secured promotion to the Premier League. His form subsequently convinced Chelsea to pay £30m for him last summer.

Things have been far less productive in west London, however. Delap managed only one Premier League goal during his first season with Chelsea and now finds himself facing increased competition for minutes.

Delap has previously been described as a “brilliant” player by Micah Richards, and Ipswich could now explore whether a return to Suffolk can help revive his career.

For the Tractor Boys, bringing back a striker who already knows the club and has proven he can perform in their system could be an attractive way to strengthen their attack before the window closes.
