Ipswich Town Record Transfers

Ipswich are one of the highest spending League One clubs throughout history, though the vast majority of their big-money signings came during their two spells in the top flight. The Blues made it to the inaugural Premier League season in 1992 as they won promotion to the top tier for the first time in their history.

Despite this massive achievement, the Blues only managed to compete in the Premier League for just three seasons before facing relegation in 1995, though they made their return at the start of the millennium where they battled for two more seasons, notably finishing fifth in 2000-01.

Before arriving back to the Premier League, the Blues previous record signing Marcus Stewart helped them massively. The English striker originally arrived at Ipswich for £3.71m from rivals Huddersfield in 2000, and during their first season in the top flight Stewart finished as the league’s second top goal-scorer with 19 goals – the Blues went on to finish fifth and qualify for the UEFA Cup which saw many fans call for his England call up which never came.

Upon arrival to the top tier of English football for the second time, Ipswich splashed out millions during the summer transfer market of 2000. Notably, one play, in particular, stood out from the rest – Hermann Hreidarsson.

The Icelandic international centre-back arrived at Ipswich Town for a club-record fee of over £6m. The 6ft 3in defender played a vital role in the Blues success during their best ever league campaign. Though the following season, the club faced a reversal of fortunes which saw them relegated back down to Division One where they remained until the end of the 2018-19 season.

Hreidarsson moved on to Charlton Athletic for just £1m in March 2003 after playing over 100 games for the Blues and suffering relegation to the lower league. The following season of 2001-02, Ipswich recruited three top players to help them with their increased European fixtures.

Goalkeeper Matteo Sereni joined from Serie B side Sampdoria for £5.6m making him the second-highest transfer in club history. Along with Sereni arrived Marcus Bent from Blackburn Rovers and Finidi George who was brought in from RCD Mallorca, each for around £4m.

Famous Ipswich Town Transfers

Tyrone Mings was famously brought in by Ipswich Town in 2012 for just £10k. The former Chippenham Town player made over 50 appearances for the Blues before catching the eye of Premier League newcomers Bournemouth. Mings joined the Cherries for a massive £10.17m fee making him the club’s record sale.

Since then, the centre-back has gone on to make his England debut as well as making a move to Aston Villa where he is currently playing – stay up to date with more Ipswich Town transfer rumours here!
