Leeds United: EFL statement offers boost to Whites’ hopes of promotion

Leeds United

Many Leeds fans will likely be delighted to learn that they could be promoted to the Premier League even if the Championship season does not end on the pitch.

A statement via BBC Sport outlined how the season would end if clubs were unable to return to the pitch. Revealing that promotion and relegation would remain if a points-per-game system is implemented, the EFL also said that the play-offs would continue with a maximum of four teams battling it out for promotion.

Leeds, who sit top of the Championship table as things stand, will no doubt be relieved to discover that, even if the season cannot be completed on the pitch, they would be promoted if they can retain their place in the top two.

That should come as a welcome boost after 16 years outside of the Premier League and after last season’s bitter disappointment of play-off semi-final defeat to Derby.

The club’s fans will likely be encouraged by the EFL statement, which comes after Championship clubs were given the green light to return to training next week.

The Elland Road faithful have been made to wait a long time to taste top-flight football but this latest development seems to have brought a Premier League return significantly closer.

Leeds fans, are you confident that the Whites will clinch promotion on the field of play? Comment below with your views!
