Sheffield Wednesday: Julian Borner nominated for Championship Player of the Month

Julian Borner

Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Julian Borner has been nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award (swfc.co.uk).

The German will go head-to-head with three other players for the award; Huddersfield Town’s Juninho Bacuna, Millwall striker Tom Bradshaw and Aleksandar Mitrovic at Fulham.

October was a superb month for Borner, who featured in four of their five matches in the month (via Transfermarkt).

The 28-year-old helped the Owls to two wins and a draw in those four matches and was a key figure in them keeping two clean sheets against Wigan Athletic and Stoke City respectively (Transfermarkt).

Added to that, the defender also managed to bag himself a goal in their trip to Cardiff City, his first of the campaign (Transfermarkt).

As a result, he has been nominated for the Player of the Month award, with the winner set to be announced on Friday.

Borner arrived at Hillsborough from Arminia Bielefeld in the summer and has been an ever present for Sheffield Wednesday this season, starting 14 Championship matches (Transfermarkt).

Borner certainly deserves his nomination and has a great chance of winning given how key he has been for Sheffield Wednesday at the back.

In each of his four appearances in October, the German received a WhoScored rating of 7.30 or higher, showing just how consistently excellent he was for the Owls.

He does face tough competition to win the award, however. Indeed, Mitrovic scored six goals in five appearances in October (Transfermarkt), Bradshaw managed to rack up three goals and an assist in the same time (Transfermarkt), whilst Bacuna also scored three goals and provided an assist from midfield (Transfermarkt).

Each of them have strong claims to win it, and if it was Borner then he would certainly deserve it.
